Delaware County Chamber of Commerce Plays Integral Role in Support of Effort

SWARTHMORE, April 13 – State Representative Bryan R. Lentz, D-Delaware, today held an educational forum for local businesses to learn about financial incentives for hiring military veterans. The event, held at the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, was attended by representatives from area businesses, including the Boeing Corporation, eager to learn about the programs.

"Servicemen and women are known for their discipline, dedication and ability to learn new skills quickly,” said Lentz. “They would be an asset to any business and we are here today to help get the word out."

“The Delaware County Chamber was excited to host this event and invite our membership due to the importance of helping veterans, and also because the benefit to employers who can receive significant rebates for hiring veterans,” said Jeff Vermeulen, President of the Delaware County Chamber.

Lentz, a US Army Iraq War veteran, was joined by Brad Brown, advocate and expert on veteran’s benefits, Walter Welsh of CareerLink, and tax accountant Peter Barsz who informed the audience about taking advantage of tax incentives to employers hiring veterans, government funding available to retrain veterans for specific job placement, and advertising and screening qualified candidates for a variety of positions. Jourdain Frain of Wall Street Warfighters, an organization that trains and places disabled veterans in the financial sector, also paneled the discussion.

"Returning veterans appreciate our gratitude and respect upon their return but in order for them to purse the American dream that they fought to protect, they need a job. These programs make it good business to be in the business of hiring veterans." said Lentz.

Earlier this week Lentz, a member of the House of Representatives’ Veterans Affairs Committee, helped pass legislation that will help active-duty National Guard and U.S. military reservists to obtain job training after they return from service.

Lentz said the legislation (H.B. 339) would give Pennsylvania National Guard and U.S. military reservists and their eligible spouses preference for job-training programs under the state's Workforce Development Act for a year after their discharge from active-duty assignment. The bill would not guarantee direct placement into a training program.

The workforce system is aimed at enhancing employer competitiveness and innovation, while preparing Pennsylvanians for new careers in higher-wage jobs.

"If we want to support our troops 100 percent, overseas and at home, then the General Assembly should act quickly on this measure," Lentz said.
