As the deadline approaches for legislators to file paperwork to run for election in 2010, some are beginning to announce their retirements. Rep. Kathy Manderino announced this month she will not seek re-election to the state House, ending her 18-year run in the General Assembly. She joins Rep. Russ Fairchild (R-Union), Rep. Merle Phillips (R-Northumberland), Rep. Paul Clymer (R-Bucks), Rep. Rich Grucela (D-Northampton), Rep. Katie True (R-Lancaster) and Rep Barbara McIlvaine Smith (D-Chester). Barbara McIlvaine Smith, a 2 term legislator, stated her reasons for not seeking re-election were based on "the system is such that it's not set up to accomplish anything or to resolve issues," she said. "The way it's set up, the leadership in all four caucuses has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo." Shocking news came when Speaker of the House, Keith McCall announced his retirement from the House. McCall began his 28-year career in the Legislature at the age of 23, and will be just 51 when he leaves office, with plenty of time to start a second career. Plus, with a pension that could surpass $90,000 a year, he will also be able to spend time with his 11-year-old and 9-year-old children. ![]() |
