$950 billion, 2,800-page health care legislation was signed into law in. the law requires all American’s have health insurance by 2014, and in fact some of the most complex and far-reaching changes will not take effect for several years. In the meantime, this new law does not address many of the core issues that led to calls for heathcare reform. In fact, this legislation is likely to lead to higher premiums, costs and taxes. Also, requiring small businesses to provide insurance, or be fined, will likely eliminate jobs. Indeed, employers with more then 50 employees could face federal fines for not providing insurance coverage. Almost immediately, people who have been locked out of the insurance market because of a pre-existing condition will be eligible for subsidized coverage through a new high-risk insurance program, insurance companies can not cancel the policies of people who fall ill, and children with pre-existing conditions can not be denied coverage. Also, dependent children up to age 26 would be eligible for coverage under their parents’ plans . And within three months of the law’s taking effect, The Chamber Commerce feels this new plans does not address rising health care costs; fails to lead to more affordable, accessible, and high-quality health care; moves the nation toward government-run health care; and will increase taxes. The Chamber will continue to press for pragmatic, market-based health care reform that does not include new employer mandates, higher taxes, limits frivolous law suits, and expands consumer choice. Health reform must help to make our homes, our communities and our families healthier, safer and stronger. ![]() |
