Within the past year, several students from different schools throughout Delaware County have participated in the Foundation of the Delaware County Chamber's Job Readiness Program. Created to address the decline in skilled workers, the Job Readiness Program is typically a nine-week course; however, Chester High School administered the program for 16 weeks this year. Job Readiness has provided many students with the necessary tools to market themselves and proved its successfulness when the students began to get jobs, scholarships and awards. Job Readiness is a multi-faceted program that includes a wide variation of topics and even brings in professionals from different career fields. All topics including how to fill out a job application, writing a resume and cover letter, how to dress for success, interviewing techniques, and where to start for a job search are taught. This year, Penn Wood High School students had the opportunity to attend an etiquette luncheon, which taught them how to properly dine in a professional environment. As of this year, there have been 120 graduates of the program: 30 graduates from Chester High School, fifteen in 2006 and fifteen in 2007. The Job Readiness Program has not only taken off in Chester High School, but also at Ridley, Interboro, Penn Wood, and Chester Youth Build (a national alternative education program). Within the next year, it is expected that more schools will want to adopt the program. ![]() |
